What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a holistic body therapy from Japan and a recognised method of Complementary Therapy. Rather than focusing solely on relieving symptoms, Shiatsu sees the person as a whole, embracing the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of our being.

Shiatsu is much more than a form of massage. It can support profound processes of healing and personal growth, encouraging transformation on physical, emotional, and sometimes even spiritual levels. A brief conversation before and after each treatment helps deepen self-awareness, allowing your experience to be gently reflected upon and integrated into everyday life.

Treatments are given fully clothed on a comfortable futon mattress. Using gentle yet deeply effective pressure with the hands, thumbs, knees, and elbows, together with stretches and gentle rotations, I work along the body's meridians—the pathways through which life energy flows. This supports the release of tension and energetic blockages, helping to restore balance, vitality, and a sense of wholeness.

Shiatsu invites you to reconnect with your body, deepen your self-awareness, and cultivate a more compassionate relationship with yourself—creating the foundation for lasting health, resilience, and wellbeing.

Self-Shiatsu

Self-Shiatsu is a gentle and empowering practice that enables you to give yourself a therapeutic treatment through guided movements, acupressure, work with specific body areas, and gentle techniques that follow the course of the vagus nerve.

The vagus nerve is a key part of the parasympathetic nervous system—often referred to as the body's "rest and restore" system. It plays an important role in calming the nervous system, regulating the heartbeat, supporting digestion, and reducing the effects of stress. Stimulating the vagus nerve can promote relaxation, emotional balance, resilience, and overall wellbeing.

Self-Shiatsu is a wonderful way to strengthen self-awareness, cultivate resilience, and support the body's natural capacity for self-regulation. Over time, you develop a personal "toolbox" of simple yet effective practices that can help you return to the present moment, restore inner calm, and reconnect with your centre—whatever challenges life may bring.

Self-Shiatsu is easy to learn and can be taught just as effectively online as in person, allowing you to integrate these practices into your daily life wherever you are.

The Origins of Shiatsu

The art of healing through touch to activate life energy (Qi) has a history spanning thousands of years. Shiatsu has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine and gradually spread to Japan, where it continued to evolve.

Influenced by Western medicine, physiotherapy, and psychology, Shiatsu developed into a modern, holistic form of body therapy that supports health, balance, and personal wellbeing on physical, emotional, and energetic levels.

Who Is Shiatsu For?

Shiatsu is suitable for people of all ages who wish not only to relieve their symptoms, but also to explore the deeper causes behind them. For those who are willing to question familiar patterns of thought and behaviour and take an active role in their own wellbeing, Shiatsu can support profound and lasting change.

Shiatsu can also be a valuable complement to psychotherapy. It allows current themes to be experienced on a bodily level, supporting their gradual processing and integration.
